Almost a month after Jirnexu Co-Founders – Lucas Ooi and Liew Onn Hann – announced their plans to step back from their respective executive roles, the two revealed their next venture: Halogen Capital (Halogen).

Like Jirnexu, this new platform aims to buck mainstream trends as it takes the claim of being Malaysia’s first digital asset fund manager. Part of the reveal includes confirming that it has a full Capital Markets Services (CMS) license from Securities Commission Malaysia (SC).

The initial goal for Halogen is to make crypto-investments easily available to institutional and individual investors. According to Liew’s LinkedIn post, this includes providing access and professional management through familiar traditional structures, such as mutual funds and managed portfolios.

“This will, hopefully, (expand) to Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF),” Liew, CEO, Halogen added.

Liew, via his LinkedIn post, confirmed that he and Ooi – as Fintech-based entrepreneurs – have been keeping a close eye on the development of digital assets in Malaysia over the years.

“As of mid-2023, crypto-investing for Malaysian investors is a choice between using unregulated or unlicensed off-shore exchanges and protocols with all (the) added risks or using retail-focused registered platforms on-shore for short-term trading, rather than investing. Surely there’s a way to bring crypto-investing into the mainstream and open it up safely to individual and institutional investors?” Liew shared.

This is where Halogen will play a key role as it will provide digital asset trading with all the protections of segregated trust structures and regulatory oversight and safeguards that are presently being used in traditional capital markets.

Beyond traditional investment principles, Halogen Capital will also provide the following:

  • Innovative investing: Besides digitising and automating client engagement, Halogen will also introduce new asset classes and provide ease-of-access to enhanced risk-adjusted returns
  • Measured risk-taking: Halogen offers combined macro-economic driven top-down asset allocations with bottom-up blockchain network and crypto-asset selections for its digital portfolio

“The TL;DR: (Ooi) and I are now working on building and scaling Malaysia’s first licensed (crypto-based) fund management company. (Message) us if you want to find out more,” Liew noted.
